GILAKAS'LA / LEARNING KWAK'WALA

GILAKAS'LA / LEARNING KWAK'WALA
Kwak'wala: Species of the Pacific Northwest

OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND

I live, work and play on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations and Hul'q'umi'num First Nation. My work takes me to many Territories and Treaty areas. I am grateful to those who welcome me. Grateful for those who share their culture and knowledge with me. I am grateful for the Elders who are with us today, those who have gone before us and the many vibrant voices that take us into the future. I recognize and acknowledge the land, flora and fauna that surrounds us. I stand with the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action. I am grateful for their work and invite you to be curious, to learn more about this country, our history and our heritage as I continue to humbly do myself. Gilakas'la

We honour all living beings

"Gilakas'la. We love and respect our world, its animals and its people. Each of us shares a relationship with the Earth and with each other. Sharing these stories deepens that connection. It is my hope that by strengthening that connection it will inspire all of us to be mindful, to take better care, to lift each other up and to do our best to shield and protect our world so it can thrive. I honour and celebrate diversity, inclusivity and dignity for all living things."

SHONISAURUS SIKANNIENSIS

More than 200 million years ago, the Shonisaurus sikanniensis swan in our ancient seas. A 70-foot long specimen encased in limestone was unearthed on the banks of the Sikanni Chief River. Many beautiful souls contributed to our knowledge and excavation of Shoni, particularly from Dean Lomax, Sven Sachs and our own Betsy Nicholls.

MAMMA MOOSE, BABY MOOSE... GRIZZLY!

We freeze cameras in hand. In seconds the three are upon us. Mamma moose runs straight for us and reaching our boats turns 90 degrees and bolts for the woods -- her calf fast on her heels. The Grizzly, running and caught up in the thrill of the kill, doesn’t notice the deke, hits the brakes and stands up on her hind legs in front of us, ready for some lunch.

URSAVUS / TEK-WAY-DEE

The Bowron Lakes are at an elevation of 3000 ft. making both Grizzly and Black Bear sightings are common. Both bear families descend from a common ancestor, Ursavus, a bear-dog the size of a raccoon who lived more than 20 million years ago. Seems an implausible lineage having just met of the their larger descendents.

MYOMANCY | ROLL THE MICE

Myomancy was a method of divination by mice. Their behaviour was observed and taken as a omen of what was to come. Modern scientists study the movements of mice more than the ancient myomancers did and for ends that are not dissimilar.

Rain long foretold takes a long time to pass; if it arrives on short notice, it soon will pass. For the folks I go out collecting with all hikes, digs and kayak trips are rain or shine. Safety is always top of mind and prepping for the weather is paramount. Keep yourself safe whatever part of the world you choose to explore.
